Fouras-les-Bains is not a seaside town like the others: old fishing village, it became a famous place during the XIX century with the beginning of the sea-baths fashion and it still keeps its 1900s soul.
Thanks to the circuit “Au fil des rues”, you can discover the wooded peninsula and go back to the past, at the beginning of the XX century. The circuit brings you to Fort Vauban where you will find the Fouras Museum.

When it comes to swimming, the town give you choices of bathing spots with 5 fine sandy beaches: Grande Plage, Plage Nord, Plage de la Vierge, Plage Sud and Plage de l’Espérance. Keep an eye on the tides timetable if you want to swim. You will appreciate the temperature of the sea water, rising or falling tide.
Good to know: a natural sea swimming pool is located at the Grande Plage! It allows you to swim at any time of the day !
Off the Pointe de la Fumée, you can buy some of the most renowned oysters and mussels directly from our local producers. Enjoy them in their huts or in the fish market (Halle aux poissons) which is open all year as well as the covered market (Halle des 4 saisons).
From the Fort Vauban, you will discover a magnificent panorama, classified Grand Site de France(registered site protected by Law) since 2020 and from which one can clearly distinguish the island of Oléron, the island of Aix (accessible by ferry from the Pointe de la Fumée), the Fort Boyard and the Île Madame.
